Thyroid Problems in Indian Women: The Silent Epidemic

By Ayustri Wellness Team

Why Thyroid Issues Are So Common in Indian Women

India has one of the highest rates of thyroid disorders in the world, with women being 5–8 times more likely to be affected than men. Iodine deficiency, selenium deficiency, chronic stress, and autoimmune triggers (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) are the primary drivers.

Symptoms That Are Often Missed

The classic symptoms — weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, cold hands — are frequently dismissed as 'just stress' or 'getting older'. Other less-known signs include brain fog, constipation, low mood, irregular periods, and difficulty conceiving.

The Hormone Connection

Thyroid hormones regulate every cell in your body. When thyroid function is low, it directly impacts oestrogen metabolism, progesterone production, and cortisol regulation. This is why thyroid issues and PCOS often co-exist.

Nutrition That Supports Thyroid Health

  • Selenium: Brazil nuts (2 per day), sunflower seeds, and eggs support T4 to T3 conversion
  • Iodine: Seaweed, dairy, and iodised salt — but not in excess if you have Hashimoto's
  • Avoid raw cruciferous vegetables: Cooking deactivates goitrogens in broccoli and cauliflower
  • Ashwagandha: Shown in studies to improve thyroid hormone levels in subclinical hypothyroidism

Getting Tested

A standard TSH test alone is not enough. Ask for Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb) for a complete picture. Many women with 'normal' TSH still have significant symptoms.
